Former Sutton Coldfield Council House redevelopment plans unveiled

THE first artist's impressions of the new-look Sutton Coldfield Council House have been unveiled after multi-million pound plans were announced to turn the historic site into luxury residences.
The Observer revealed earlier this month that the locally-listed landmark had been sold to a developer with plans for a £10million revamp to convert it into homes.
Gethar Ventures will transform the building in King Edward's Square into 18 'spacious' apartments – which will be renamed Royal Sutton Place – with a proposed new-build development of apartments and restaurant units on the adjacent site.
The developer is looking to retain many original features – believed to be a decisive factor that persuaded Birmingham City Council to sell to them – and is reflected in the first visions created by architects Holloway Foo.
Originally designed as the entrance, one image shows the rear of the beautiful building – making it an unseen treasure in Sutton's architectural history.
Anthony McCourt, director at Gethar Ventures, said: "When we announced plans for the development we spoke about the importance of any work being done in good taste and retaining the building's original quality. We're happy to be judged on that and the artist's impression shows we're not making any major changes to the exterior of the building.
"But there is a lot of internal work that needs doing. The building hasn't had a lot of love and attention in recent years and it needs it. It will be a complete gutting and renovation."
The former council house, which is currently empty, is within the protected High Street Sutton Coldfield Conservation Area. It was put up for sale by the cash-strapped council in 2012.
The deal is also understood to include a former council car park in Upper Clifton Road, which will provide a parking area to accompany the development.
This is Gethar Ventures' first residential development having started work on two city centre hotels in Birmingham and Liverpool.
Contracts have been exchanged and a formal planning proposal is now being considered and discussions held with the council's planning department.
The developer has said it wants to make the mixed-use site a 'real destination' for Sutton.
Mr McCourt added: "These are going to be very exclusive residences. You are talking about luxury apartments, a lot of duplexes and about 1,600sqft of space, on average."
Work on the main site is expected to be completed by next summer, with the new-build project set to start shortly afterwards.
